The true story of a girl who lost her mother, home, and family too young, and who waited until she was (almost) too old to form a family of her own.
Betsy Armstrong always believed she would die young, as her 46-year-old mother had, but then, she turned 47 and thought about the one thing she’d always avoided: children.
After a childhood overshadowed by her volatile stepfather, who also disinherited her after her mother’s death, Betsy grieved by running. Marathon after marathon, ultramarathons, and the Ironman triathlon gave her purpose and eventually, landed her her dream job, and even her husband!
But her 47th birthday and a life-changing injury called everything into question – what will she do now that she’s going to live, especially if she can’t run?
Inspired by a friend’s adoption, Betsy and her husband grappled with mountains of paperwork, a failed adoption, and a Russian courtroom drama. While their chances of adopting waxed and waned, Betsy struggled with the end of her athletic life, and the ever-returning grief over her dead mother. As the end of their adoption journey neared, Betsy finally quit running away and discovered the family she’d been searching for all along.
